On June 20-21, was organized at the AKBN, the WORKSHOP “On the Just Transition in Mining Communities and the Potential Opportunities for Geothermal Energy Development” The workshop offered to the participants an opportunity to think about how UNECE can best help Albania and other member states in their efforts for the transition of their post-coal mining areas in accordance with the principles of green economy and just transition and ensuring a sustainable use of natural resources. A new potential project on drawing up Albania’s readiness for a green and just transition in the post-coal mining areas, was discussed at the workshop.
The workshop had an open discussion session, involving all the actors, who tried to identify what actions should be taken to implement the new project in the most effective way, which will give to Albania the right impetus for the necessary change towards a green and just transition in mining areas. Participants from other countries within the UNECE region, who were present at the workshop or following it online, as well, were the beneficiaries of the discussion, as it gave them an opportunity to identify and familiarize themselves with solutions and strategies that may be applicable to their respective conditions.
